Witches and Vampires, Oh My..

June 2, 2011

Today is the anniversary of the beginning of the hysteria that was the Salem witch trials. Fueled by the provocative power of teenage girls smothered by a repressively strict societal culture, in the end nearly 200 people were persecuted as witches, many of whom died.

So here’s the thing, does it feel as though we’re dangerously close to this sort of exclusionary, isolating, ostracizing and (dare I say) racist behavior yet again? Are we really going to have to go to the extremes of fundamentalist (be it Muslim or Christian) closed-mindedness before we step into a new way of spiritual congregation? Do pagans and witches and atheists and agnostics have to disappear once again from public view? Am I the only one who sees a connection between this extreme religiosity and the latest fad for all things vampire? Must we go back to the fable of good versus evil in the name of some god?

Not here.
